Measuring Construction Industry Performance Essay
Measuring Construction Industry Performance - Essay Example Revenues from constructed buildings are not keeping pace with escalating cost of equipments, transportation and other economic factors. The prices of related construction items are quietly unrelated to the expenditure put in constructing, transporting materials, processing and selling. Floods and droughts have made the established businessmen to become debtors though they have borrowed money and invested the same in equipment and land. There are delays in getting government funds, which are in adequate to meet these types of natural calamities. Though there are private insurance companies to cover insurance of these investments from weather-related catastrophes they are not that much helpful. The small players who solely depend on their investments are the losers of these natural calamities. Like any other traders or businessmen, investors can ensure long term growth and stability through proper planning in changing market conditions during the periods of floods, drought and in price downsizing and also taking the help of key performance indicators (KPI) or benchmarking so that they may not depend on the assistance and support of government. Sharon McClements et al (2002) concluded that the Construction Best Practice Programme, have developed a benchmarking gateway known as KPI zone. In construction fi In construction field, many problems are attributed to UK consumer's refusal to recognise and pay for value added to the products produced by the small investors. Because of this, the investors are not able recover their investments and expenses through sales which tends them to expect government subsidies to support them. The investors are not in a position to bear the smallest price increase in power tariff. There are two types of economic nationalism. The first protection in trade is represented in establishing a system of rates and tariffs in favour of domestic production and discourages foreign imports. This kind of protection is desired to encourage establishment of industrial base in UK by saving small and infant industries against the competition of larger and well-established firms in abroad. The second economic protectionism is a post world war -II phenomenon that is related to the proprietorship as UK businesses by foreign traders and investors. Multinational companies have been set up after world war-II due to immense investments of foreigners in UK business. Multinational companies thought that they could evade tariff restrictors in UK by introducing their own branches plants and subsidiaries, which allowed them to go to markets, mobilize resources and capital and get favours with UK government. These kinds of investments have created to the economic nationalism due to expansion of multinational companies. The foreign owned companies could not take central position over economic decisions from their head office from outside UK. The economists in UK are compelled to demand for bringing out a legislation to oversee the activities and restrain the growth of foreign ownership in UK economy. UK is one of the members of many international groups; one amongst them is G-8, the eight largest industrial democracies. The G-8 countries heads of governments

An Argument on Education Essay Example for Free
An Argument on Education Essay Abstract Education is important to have with todayââ¬â¢s economy in the shape that it is in. However, there are different ways that people define education. Some people believe that to be considered well educated they need to have the top education in the United States, the highest GPA, and the highest standardized testing scores! I firmly believe that your knowledge first comes from the Lord and that he will bless you in whatever area he has for you! There are many examples that we can use to see both sides and not just judging someone as well educated only through grades ad excellence in school. An Argument on Education Education is important for everyone to have growing up if they want to make it by in todayââ¬â¢s modern world. However, everyone seems to determine how well educated someone else is in a different ways such as: their test scores, papers that they write, their grade point average, and their knowledge of knowing how to do things. In Alfrie Kohnââ¬â¢s Article (2003), ââ¬Å"What does it mean to be well ââ¬âeducatedâ⬠he cites a quote from an Alred Whitehead stating, ââ¬Å"A merely well-informed man is the most useless bore on Godââ¬â¢s earth. . .à . Scraps of informationâ⬠are only worth something if they are put to use, or at least ââ¬Å"thrown into fresh combinations. â⬠There are parts of this quote that I agree and disagree on. I agree with Alred saying that men on this earth that just have bits and pieces of information are useless unless it can relate to their job that gets them by. Acquiring knowledge isnââ¬â¢t a bad thing, its just not always needed. I only disagree because I believe that if someone does know a large amount that it is not pointless, it just should not determine whether or not they are educated or not. Throughout the years I have had the chance to be in school I have learned and observed much through my own personal experiences as well as being surrounded by my peers at school and at home. Personally, I am one of those students who can learn the material I am asked to learn but when it comes to taking tests I freeze up and get extremely anxious, which allows me to do poorly on the tests. I had extremely low SAT scores and low-test scores from any big test, but I was also an honor graduate and gradated in the top one hundred out of six hundred students. Many people would consider me uneducated just because of low standardized tests when they do not think of other factors that could reason for why I get low scores. High-test scores alone and high GPAââ¬â¢s cannot determine whether or not someone is well educated. At the beginning of Alfrie Kohnââ¬â¢s article he gives a superior example of this by telling us that his wife who went to Harvard and does not even know her math or English well. ââ¬Å"She will, however, freeze up if you ask her what 8 times 7 is, because she never learned the multiplication table. And forget about grammar (ââ¬Å"Me and him went over her house todayâ⬠is fairly typical) or literature (ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s Faulkner? â⬠). Harvard is known as One of the top prestigious school in America, and because of that most people would assume that who ever goes to that school is well educated. This is example is similar to how it is with anything but what people do not realize is some of the worldââ¬â¢s well-educated people did not even graduate from high school. I believe that being well educated means being able to put what you know to use and being able to use that knowledge to glorify the one who created me. As a strong believer in Christ, I believe my relationship with God and spreading his word is more important than knowledge. However, that does not mean that I believe a person should be uneducated. I believe that if given the opportunity to learn we should not take it for granted and that we should bring glory to God through it. I just believe that at the end of your days that God does not care about what degree you have in your hand but he cares about how you lived your life for him. ââ¬Å"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. 11 For by me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your lifeâ⬠(Proverbs 9:10-11). Our good lord explains that education is first gained through God himself and that your purpose is to live solely for him. Gaining knowledge in Christ is the most important first and he will Bless you in every other area in your life that he feels you need. However, I do believe that getting a degree in something that God is calling you to do. For me, God is calling me to be a missionary Nurse overseas. I know in order to do that I have to get an education on how to be a Nurse in order to carryout Godââ¬â¢s will for my life. Most people believe that you need to go to a good school to be considered well educated. I was going to a community college back at home and was learning much when people were questioning why I was going to a community college and that I could get a better education at a different college or university that was away from home. Alfrie Kohnââ¬â¢s wife attended Harvard and still did not know her multiplication tables and wasnââ¬â¢t good at grammar or literature. I believe this is a good example to my previous statement about how it shouldnââ¬â¢t matter what school you go to and that it should not determine how well educated he or she is just because of the title the school has. Everyone has his or her own view on what they believe is a well-educated person, but I feel as if not everyone looks at every viewpoint. They just go off what they know and what first comes to mind. Today because of the way our economy is set up people believe that the only way someone can be considered well educated is if they go to a college to further their degree. There are other ways that someone can get jobs such as enlisting in the military or even through taking over a family-owned business. Determining whether or not someone is educated through tests, and by what schools he or she attended is absurd. You can see that from taking a glance at the people in the world that are huge successes to back that statement up. If we determined whether or not someone was well educated by whether or not he or she graduated college than something is wrong. Bill Gates is a wonderful example because if it were not for him then a lot of todayââ¬â¢s popular gadgets such as the Mac Books, iPhones, and iPods would not exist today. He is an intelligent man and has brought on huge changes in todays society. It is not our place to judge who is and who is not educated based on these assumptions References Kohn, Alfie. Rates of reaction:- sodium thiosulphate + hydrochloric acid :: GCSE Chemistry Coursework Investigation
Rates of reaction:- sodium thiosulphate + hydrochloric acid Plan:- We must produce a piece of coursework investigating the rates of reaction, and the effect that changing one particular variable has on the reaction time. The rate of reaction is the time it takes one or more of the reactants to react or the time it takes to produce a new product from a chemical reaction. To work out the reaction time we use the formula. 1 divided by time taken for reaction There are five factors which affect the rate of a reaction, according to the collision theory of reacting particles: 1. temperature of solution, 2. concentration of solution, 3. pressure of gases in reaction, 4. surface area of reactants, 5. Catalysts. For my preliminary experiments I have chosen to investigate the effect temperature and concentration have on a reaction. I have chosen to investigate these reactants because the are the most practical for the lab and equipment that I have available to use also it would take to much time to prepare a solid in powdered and unpowdered form, and it is difficult to get accurate readings due to the inevitabilities of human errors, and as gas is mostly colourless it is difficult to gauge a reaction changing the pressure, and if a substance is added to give the gas colour, it may influence the outcome of the experiment. Similarly the use of a catalyst complicates things, and if used incorrectly could alter the outcome of the experiment. My preliminary experiments showed me that it would me more practical and time saving if I just altered the temperature of the solution as changing the concentration of the solution was very time consuming. However the preliminary experiments also helped me to choose a suitable strength of solution. Aim:- To see the effects of a change in temperature on the rate of a reaction. The reaction that will be used is: Sodium Thiosulphate + Hydrochloric Acid. Na2S2O3 (aq) + 2HCl (aq) . As I decided after my preliminary experiments I will only carry out one experiment, temperature change whilst all other variables stay constant. As both, sodium thiosulphate and hydrochloric acid are soluble in water it means that I would be able to alter the concentration of either of them. However I have chosen to vary the sodium thiosulphate as it is available in larger amounts. To alter the temperature of the solution a water bath will be used to heat up the acid, thiosulphate and water to the necessary temperature. I decided on my range temperatures and the concentration that I would use during my preliminary series of experiments - I would be using a concentration of 0.

Divorce and Our National Values Essay
Peter Kramer in his essay ââ¬Å"Divorce and Our National Valuesâ⬠suggests that either Americans celebrate the individual, autonomy, and self-fulfillment or we honor marriage as the centerpiece of social stability. The question is whether these values can be competitive and destructive or can they be complementary and empowering. Through teamwork and communication, marriage can be complementary and empowering while being honored as the centerpiece of social stability; however clashing points of view can cause the relationship to be competitive and destructive. First of all, I am the perfect person that can talk about marriage because I am married. Individualism, autonomy, self-fulfillment and the concept of marriage being the centerpiece of social stability all play their role positively if balanced correctly. Although we worked together to pay bills and satisfy our needs, we also supported each otherââ¬â¢s sense of worth and striving towards our personal goals, such as educ ation and travel. Positive support and feedback are very important because there will always be disappointing moments, even overwhelming at times. Being reminded and loved helps society and our marriage move forward. Marriage being the centerpiece of society strives for the greater good, which is the world. I am in the Navy, an organization that gives me self-fulfillment. My wife is always at the house and after a while, she becomes itching to find herself other than be a housewife. We take up many identities: I am a sailor, a husband and a friend. With these titles, not only we can play multiple roles in society but at the same time, it contributes to personal satisfaction and from there, you can help others including the family succeed in any aspect. However, there is a dark side to all of this. Secondly, clashing viewpoints can cause relationships to be competitive and destructive. In most cases, selfishness is one example of a destructive viewpoint. Although there is a certain extent one can be selfish, too much selfishness is destructive to all walks of life, both work and relationship wise. I hear from my friends and family talk about people they knew that would go out and party instead of staying at home to spend quality time with the family. They talked about how the husband had to grow up fast due to impregnating his high school sweetheart and joining the workforce without realizing his personal ambitions or experiencing life as a bachelor. In society, women are more prone to settling down at younger ages than men. However, both sides are at guilt due to maturity and making the big decision of starting a family. Despite all the clashing, couples learn to understand each otherââ¬â¢s viewpoints or edit themselves for the integrity of the relationship; all others take a turn for the worse and are not willing to work at the relationship, being satisfied with the outcome and themselves. Divorce can be double-sided or one-sided. In total, it depends on the couples and their viewpoints; some work out and some donââ¬â¢t. Although clashing viewpoints can be detrimental to marriage and even unsuccessful marriages hurting society as a whole, I believe that teamwork and communication will lead marriage in the right direction and can be honored as the centerpiece of social stability. We must learn to set aside our differences for the sake of the new generations to come. I do believe that nothing is perfect in our society; however people in general will become more productive, positive and moralistic when these values are incorporated into them, especially the marriage and eventually everyone will be able to understand one another for the sake of the greater good. M&Ms Are Better Than Smarties Essays - Candy, Smarties, MMs
M&M's Are Better Than Smarties Essays - Candy, Smarties, MMs M&M's Are Better Than Smarties Woo, they taste great! They're superior to ordinary, tasteless Smarties. What are they? This is the common reply to all who are given the delicious chocolate M & M's. M & M's are by far the finest chocolate that has been made, coated within a little shell, then coloured and finally imprinted with the letters 'MM'. No other chocolate can ever compare with the great tasting M & M's. Smarties are larger than M & M's but unfortunately, they just don't taste as good. Many believe that the bigger the size of the chocolate, the better it will taste. This is not always the case, M & M's are much smaller than Smarties and they taste better than they do. A major difference between the both of them is the shell coating the chocolate. The shell of a smartie is quite hard and every hard to bite into, but the M & m shell is perfectly right, not too hard and not too soft. Another difference with the shell is that when you place the Smartie in your mouth and slowly absorb the colouring until u reach the shell, it tastes disgusting. Compared to the shell of an M & M your mouth begins to water when the shell is slowly crunched in between your teeth. The Smartie will never be able to have a tastier shell than M & M's. The chocolate within that scrumptious shell is magnificent. It just melts in your mouth, leaving a nice taste that excites your taste buds. The chocolate used for making Smarties is very bland, and it tastes like cheap chocolate Easter eggs. When you decide to indulge into a Smartie be shore that you don not hold then in your hands, because they will melt in your hands, and not in your mouth. When indulging in an M & M they just melt in your mouth, and not in your hands. When eating the other chocolate you must be near a water source so the colour does not stain your skin. They are very dangerous chocolates because they can also stain your clothes. Many mothers out there would rather give her child a M & m's which does not stain anything than a Smartie which would make them have more washing. See when you buy a packet of Smarties, and you look at the packaging, there is nothing that appeals to the average human being. When observing the packaging of the M & M's, people are automatically draw to it. The packet has those adorable little cartoon M & M's that convince you to buy their product. Now you don't see Smarties being the official candy of the millennium that's because M & M's are. Due to there scrumptious taste, and mostly because 'MM' is the roman numerals for 2000. It's like it was fate or something that M & M's are going to be the official candy of the millennium. Now I know, I'm going to buy M & M's from now on. That's the common reply from many who have stepped higher in life, when they begin to chose M & M's over Smarties, for various reasons that have already been explained.
